I don’t think anything could have prepared any of us for the horror of Donald Trump in politics.

No one thought that this man could possibly end up as the most powerful person on the planet.

Well, apart from the very quiet and and secretive few people who decided he could be used safely in the role of President. But I think even they are having second thoughts about the man’s sanity!

Both candidates have skeletons aplenty in their closets to be held against them if they were to show signs of independent thinking, but that’s highly unlikely.

Trump is the more interesting of the two, mainly because Mrs Clinton has experience of high level political life. Trump on the other hand, is politically naive and mentally as well as follicly unbalanced.

The first I heard of him, was being made bankrupt due to to huge losses on the building of Trump Towers or some other vanity project. People thought he would just disappear like many other high flying but reckless businessmen. But back he came and seemingly without any trouble, was soon in the limelight and back in the construction business.

It was surprising that such a spectacular bankrupt could be back in business and be bigger than ever he had been before his finances went down the toilet.

The Trump name had become a brand. A brand which he was selling around the world.

He was an arrogant, opinionated braggart who didn’t care who he upset as he trampled his way around the world’s best and most famous golf venues. But not only was he buying courses, he was building them. Designed by the some of the best golfers in the game, they all had his stamp of garish bravado.

It was obvious that here was a man who craved the respect of the establishment, but couldn’t quite get through the golden gates to the party to which he thought he belonged. No matter how much he tried, he was always seen as too brash and loud to be one of the gilded few.

So one way of gatecrashing this exclusive club, was to buy the club, or at least the golf club.

When he wanted to get permission to build a new golf course, he would start a charm offensive on the local community and politicians. Local newspapers ran many positive stories about this great man, who was going to bring prosperity to every area he touched. All photo opportunities were grasped and used to his advantage.

In Scotland when he wanted to build a new course on the sand dunes on the Aberdeenshire coast, he was in overdrive schmoozing with national politicians, led by the then First Minister, Alex Salmond, another shameless publicity whore.

Nicknamed “The Donald”, by Alex Salmond, he was never far from the headlines. There were many objections to the

project. Mostly because of the wildlife which would be disturbed by this huge development. Salmond was forthright in his support for “The Donald”.

This would be a huge boost for the local community, with many jobs created. He was in almost every picture taken with Trump and stood shoulder-to-shoulder with him on television news broadcasts.

In the end, the course building went ahead and Trump had massive publicity free of charge because of the objections and other related stories.

He then bought the world famous Turnberry golf course in Ayrshire. This really was a feather in his cap. Turnberry is on the Open rota, so his own golf course would someday host the greatest golf tournament in the world!

During the time he was buying Turnberry he would also throw his hat into the ring, to become a candidate for the Presidency of the United States of America. His speeches mainly consisted of bigotry and hatred for anyone who wasn’t like himself, which was most sane people, but this was aimed at the the rancourous right wing of the Republican party. He knew exactly what he was doing.

This type of talk did not go down well here in the People’s Republic of Caledonia. There was all kinds of threats against Trump. One well known politician, a certain Alex Salmond, did a spectacular u-turn and distanced himself from Trump like a rat up a drainpipe.

Apparently he had never liked the man and anyone who thought otherwise was completely wrong. Questions were even asked in the UK parliament at Westminster, as to Trump’s suitability to even set foot on British soil again!

Now, this is just typical political opportunism. There isn’t a bandwagon these people wouldn’t jump onto if they thought it would look good to the public. Of course there was nothing they could do. But it made for some headlines and got some politicians’ faces on television and in the newspapers.

He duly appeared at the formal opening of the now christened “Trump Turnberry” course. There were protesters, but they were held back by some very heavy security people and some of Police Scotland’s finest.

In the end, it was a bit of a damp squib. He came. He saw. He gloated. And then flew off in the Trumpcopter, back to the election trail and more glory. Or maybe less glory.

It’s noticeable that as the campaign went on, his speeches because less racist and attempted to be more inclusive. He was trying to look less like some mad survivalist and more like a mainstream politician. Although this was shown to be a waste of time during and after the first presidential debate.

He was woefully inadequate in the face of some strong questioning by Mrs Clinton. She was looking like the result was a done deal before the first exchanges.

I think this showed that Trump has lost the confidence of whoever decides who will be president.

Apparently there are two more debates to come between now and November the eighth. I don’t think it matters how either candidate does, the result has already been decided.
