What’s Wrong with Chuck Hagel?
Sen. John Cornyn, a Republican from Texas, told The Daily Beast Friday, “Chuck Hagel’s opposition to Iranian sanctions and support for direct, unconditional talks with its leaders is both at odds with current U.S. policy and a threat to global security. To make matters worse, he has called for direct negotiations with Hamas. The worst possible message we could send to our friend Israel and the rest of our allies in the Middle East is Chuck Hagel.”
Talking to Iran’s leaders like adults? Opposition to crippling sanctions on Iran that cause millions of civilians to suffer undeservedly? Negotiations with Hamas? Breaking the stranglehold the pro-Israel lobby has on Uncle Sam’s throat?
To what part of Hagel’s stance should we be in opposition?
Is Obama’s appointment of Hagel a direct message to Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu? I hope so. It seems Obama might be suggesting that since Netanyahu went ‘all in’ for Mitt Romney and the hope of an all-out assault on Iran, he’s going to cool it with Israel’s leadership.
