The Ugly Spirit All Day

September 17
00:25 2011
I’ve been laden with heavy, heavy thoughts all day. It feels like the Ugly Spirit that William S Burroughs speaks of when he recalls the day he shot his wife Joan in the forehead with a pistol. In his defense, it wasn’t his fault. He didn’t mean to kill his wife, Burroughs meant to shoot off the top of her head a precariously placed apple.Well, he missed. The point is, he had been feeling what he called ‘the Ugly Spirit’ all day, and then that happened. I’ve been feeling the same thing today. I’m waiting for something disastrous to happen. A great calamity. A rolling earthquake that forces the West Coast to say goodbye to the mainland. Or an awful terrorist attack. Perhaps it’s the ugly American unemployment problem.

It’s possible I drank too much coffee. Also, it’s possible the Ugly Spirit is upon us.
