Ways To Get Beer Money

JOHN BENNETT
(poem originally sent to Bennett’s email list)
Sometimes I
miss the
old days
when I
hustled
college kids
in bars
to a
race on
the track
for
beer money.
One night
I expanded
my territory
& challenged
a hay
bucker &
when I
beat him
instead of
forking over
the ten
bucks he
chased me
around the
field
with a
hay hook.
The last
night I
drank is
the last
night I
did this
sort of
thing,
mid-November
with snow
on the ground.
I threw
my shoes
over the
cyclone fence
along with
my drinking
habit &
beat the
kid barefoot.
