Reclaiming ‘I Heard It Through the Grapevine’

Growing up with that aggravating commercial showing a brood of California raisins mocking that delicious hit, “I Heard it Through the Grapevine”, I never wanted to hear that song again. Ever. Kind of like Beethoven’s work being used to peddle boxes of fatty crackers. Whoever marketed that crapola, and decided to ruin great art while doing it, should receive the ultimate punishment that can be handed down on this earth. And that would be the only time I’m willing to support the death penalty.I recently watched Marvin Gaye perform the grapevine hit, a capella. So moving, it was. Glorious, powerful, and godly, to watch him hear the music in his head, and belt out that angelic sound past his white teeth and dark beard.
