Joshua Keating writes:
The United Nations has declared three new regions in Somalia famine zones, including the capital, Mogadishu. The news reflects the more than 100,000 people who have fled to the capital from fighting in the south of the country in recent weeks. More than 3.7 million Somalis are currently in need of aid and the southern region is now the most malnourished place on earth. The famine hasalready killed 29,000 children under the age of five, according to USAID.Relief efforts have been hampered by fighting between Islamist rebels and government troops. The al Shabaab militants launched a Ramadan offensive on Monday, killing two African Union peacekeepers in a gunfight in Mogadishu.
It sounds like hell on Earth.
