Very true — most speech is hate speech to somebody if it doesn’t pump up their ego. In fact, if I made fun of Republicans or Environmentalists another group of people would cheer while another group would jeer. If somebody really tore into Klaus Nomi, I might say:
This is hate speech. Don’t hate what you don’t understand.

That’s the difference, though – we sports fans don’t belittle you for your choice of pass-time. Intolerance and bigoted language is not the answer. And the NFL is very different from Juvenal’s time, by the way.
