DAN RUDY

I’d never heard of the man-
this famous author in the papers
(now recently deceased)
-though I may have seen ‘Get Shorty’ once
either on a plane or while escaping
from a particularly rowdy party.
Numbed and quite possibly drunk,
the plot doesn’t spring to mind
but Danny DaVito may have been in it.
Forty-five novels is quite a feat,
however, as is having a book
adapted into a screenplay.
Except for ‘Wind Talkers’, of which
I’ve also never read, but thought
the film was utter drek and could
only shame its author.
But Elmore has a certain fanciful
ring to it; a Depression-era
mobster’s monicker that may
only be stuck in my head
because I’d watched ‘The Rocketeer’
again for the fifteenth time.
I don’t know the man from Adam,
but feel saddened that another
great writer of the age has
had to be subjected to the
postmortal praise of people
who have never read him, for
the benefit of those who have
never heard of him but
feel compelled to read the
article for lack of more meaningful
tasks to do at work.
